Spanx's Rise to the Top

I have a great story for you ladies today! ATLian Sara Blakely's rise to a billionaire.

One night, Sara Blakely cut off the bottom off her pantyhose and the idea of Spanx was born. Armed with $5,000 in savings, Blakely researched and wrote her patent for footless pantyhose and drove around North Carolina begging mill owners to make her product. Most told her it would never sell, but one owner decided to take a chance and help her make her “crazy idea.” Now, the Atlanta girl is on the cover of Forbes magazine at the age of 41 as the youngest female self-made billionaire…just for reinventing the girdle.

Blakely has strong views about her wealth. “I feel like money makes you more of who you already are,” she says. “If you’re an asshole, you become a bigger asshole. If you’re nice, you become nicer. Money is fun to make, fun to spend and fun to give away.”
